The cultural products of the last century reflect change, opportunity, and uncertainty, and demonstrate active negotiations between personal identity and social awareness, nationalism and cosmopolitanism, artistic voice and security. This conference, in the centennial year of the Revolution, seeks to explore the transformations set in motion during and after the events of 1917 through an examination of cultural production and practices, located both within and without Russia. On the occasion of the centenary of the Russian revolution, the BASEES Study Group for Russian and Eastern European Music invites proposals for its 2017 conference, to be held at Goldsmiths, University of London, on Friday 15th December. The theme of the conference is ‘Music and Revolution’, and we welcome proposals that deal with a broad range of revolutionary moments in Russia and Central and Eastern Europe: from Decembrists to Bolshevists, from Springs to Singing Revolutions and the collapse of communism.
