Afrika Bambaataa meets Chico Mann at Le Poisson Rouge 158 Bleecker Street New York, NY 10012
Afrika Bambaataa - During Bambaataa's early years, he was a founding member of the Bronx River Projects-area street gang, The Savage Seven. Due to the explosive growth of the gang, it later became known as the Black Spades, and he rose to the position of Division Leader. After a life-changing visit to Africa, he changed his name to Afrika Bambaataa Aasim. Bambaataa was influenced by the depiction of the Zulu warriors attacking British troops at Rorke's Drift in the Michael Caine film Zulu.
Chico Mann: Introducing African rhythms and the music of Cuba, the Latin freestyle flavors of 1980s New York and Miami, and the synth-heavy electro beats of dance floors across the globe, multi- instrumentalist Chico Mann (aka Marcos Garcia) is making a larger musical statement that has emerged to be one of the new, vibrant styles of today.

Black Dub is the latest project from acclaimed musician and producer Daniel Lanois, a legendary guitarist and composer who has produced seminal albums for U2, Bob Dylan, Brian Eno, Willie Nelson and Neil Young. Lanois is what historians like to call a musician's musician.
He speaks here about his new band:" Black Dub is essentially a three-piece band with a high level of musicianship. We don't operate on a technological grid. Nor are we tied to a page of fixed notes. Our songs are fluid. Often recorded live. One take. No overdubs. It's a very old fashioned idea really. Our first CD is very real - kind of a rock thing, steeped in the Jamaican culture of dub, which I love. On a good day, I see myself carrying the torch of [famed Jamaican producer] Lee Scratch Perry. I wrote this music from a dub perspective, which I believe is very soulful..."
Irma Thomas remains one of America's most distinctive and classic singers, a treasure from the golden age of soul music. A contemporary of Aretha Franklin and Etta James, Irma Thomas never achieved the same level of commercial success as her contemporaries but has a huge cult following among soul afficianados. Rarely performing outside New Orleans, this is an exclusive opportunity to see a genuine legend is still incredible live. Irma is also an eight-time Blues Music Award winner including for 2010 Soul Blues Female Artist of the Year...

Los Rakas has a way of making you want to grind. Not like dirty nasty grind, perreo style. More like fiercely get down, popping and locking and shit. Hardcore shoulder bounce and gangsta lean…you get the pictures. With “Soy Raka,†the Oakland via Panama duo introduced us to turfing and all its wonders, and theyâ€'ve since continued to keep out heads bopping with their unique blend of hip hop, reggae, and dancehall.
Maluca Mala is a NY native that's toured the U.K. with Robyn on the strength of her first mixtape, China Food, and whose sound might be best described as Sleigh Bells, M.I.A. and Santogold by way of Washington Heights. (A certain high profile recording artist may or may not have have jacked Maluca's beer-cans-as-rollers swag in a music video. "Born this way" indeed ..) A self made artist, this self-proclaimed "hood hipster" has been doing it hard for two years now; and as she's also self-proclaimed broke, she'll be the first to tell you it's not for the money, but for the music.

Glenn rejoined NASA in 1998 as a member of the STS-95 Discovery crew. This 9-day mission, from Oct. 29-Nov. 7, supported a variety of research payloads including deployment of the Hubble Space Telescope Orbital Systems Test Platform and investigations on space flight and the aging process.

Bombino, born in Agadez, a dusty desert outpost on the great Saharan camel caravan, Omara "Bombino" Moctar, a young Tuareg guitarist and songwriter, was raised during an era of armed struggles for independence and violent suppression by government forces. His electrifying jams capture the spirit of resistance and rebellion while echoing with guitar riffs reminiscent of fellow Africans Tinariwen and Ali Farka Touré not to mention rock and blues icons such as Jimi Hendrix, John Lee Hooker and Jimmy Page.
NYMPH is a Brooklyn-based psychedelic-shred avant-garde outfit whose tempestuously transcendent music has penetrated the New York music scene with bared teeth! This, their self-titled debut album, was recorded by Jason Meagher (of No Neck Blues Band) at Black Dirt in upstate New York and mixed by David Tolomei at DNA in New York City from late autumn 2007 - summer 2009, and mastered by Sarah Register (of Talk Normal) at The Lodge studios in New York City. Originally self-released as a very special limited edition of 333 gatefold double LPs on their label Dog of Junipers, we at The Social Registry are very proud to be bringing the album to wider attention.

Malians love her. Khaïra Arby (pronounced: Hī-ra Arbē), the Nightingale of the North, born in the village of Abaradjou in the Sahara Desert north of Timbuktu. Khaira’s parents came from different ethnic backgrounds, mother Songhai and father Berber. You can hear these cultures in her music; she sings in several languages. The instrumentation and rhythms are just as varied with electric guitar and bass, calabash, ngoni, traditional violin, and percussion creating a complex mixture of sound and structure. Some people compare the effect to the rhythms of the camel caravans crossing the Sahara.
Khaïra lives in Timbuktu with her family. She performs at concerts and festivals throughout Mali and France . She has appeared several times with her band at the mythic Festival in the Desert in Essakane and at the Festival on the Niger River in Segou. In 2006 she was named a Chevalier de l'Ordre National du Mali.
